Hanneke van Leeuwen (born 1984 in Amsterdam) is a visual artist who focuses on photography and mixed media.
She develops her practice by building up layers, creating a visual narrative, mixing documentary work and collage
with a personal approach to materials and different sources.
In her artistic research process, the creation of images is a dialogue between the old and the new. For her, the ritual
of photography is based on a moment of connection between people in constant search of their place in this world.
By paying attention to our environment, the rhythms of daily life, history and culture, both personal and shared,
we consciously or unconsciously seek out what binds us together. It's a way of caring for others, but also for ourselves,
through these timeless paths of intersecting quests.
In photography, the image is a representation; in Hanneke Van Leeuwen's work, it becomes at the same time an object:
creating a small element of another world, where people are irrefutably present at a precise moment or part of their lives,
it's reuniting a moment that, in the blink of an eye, has already been broken, changed path and begun to follow another destiny.
A fragment open to interpretation and inimitable beauty. Finding a visual vocabulary that brings together all the discoveries.
